Saumur maintains its traditional role as a Tour start town. In 1987, the riders set off from here to Futuroscope, where Stephen Roche won a time trial that hinted at his eventual overall victory in Paris. In 2016, the peloton departed Saumur for Limoges, where Marcel Kittel demonstrated his sprinting prowess. Known for its château and the Cadre Noir, Saumur is also home to the “Anjou Vélo Vintage,” an annual event in late June that gathers vintage bicycle enthusiasts.
